Halloween Costumes

Wednesday, September 29, 2010

Does everyone have their Halloween costumes figured out? Or are you not dressing up? Just costumes for your kiddos? What are your kiddos going to be this year? I always start thinking about costumes in August for my kids. I know, a bit early but I like to be prepared. Plus, if I am making most of it rather than buying it, I have to have time to do it. But there are some really cute options out there for kiddos. There are firemen or policemen, dentists or doctors, and even superheroes! My little guy was a superhero a couple years ago. I loved it!

Or you could do some of the more traditional costumes like witches or monsters. There are tons of cute unique costume ideas out there. I made a HUGE list of options last year just because I like to have variety of ideas to choose from. I have a couple ideas up my sleeve for my kiddos this year. Have you decided?? Have any great ideas you want to share? I am always looking for more ideas!

To sleep or not to sleep...

Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Since this summer, my little sweet 3 year old that has been the best sleeper since pretty much birth has had issues falling asleep. I think it is that whole transition of a big boy bed and all that new found freedom. (Did I mention he never climbed out of his crib once?? I know, it is astounding and absolutely nothing to do with me being super mom. I guess he just didn't like the thought of falling!)

So right now his mattress is on the floor. Gasp. I know! But our budget is small and since we knew coming here this year that we would be moving in a year, I figured why move something right after getting it and risk it getting ruined! I have been looking into some bed sets though. Tons out there to choose from. Some seem a little out of our price range, at least for now. I think that we may just decide to build him one on our own. So I have been drooling over some faves on Ana White's blog. Sure do love her stuff. I have been oohing and ahhing about it from almost it's beginning and have yet to make something. With moving constantly and being all across the US, can you blame me??!

Now I have about 4-6 or maybe even 8-10, 'I HAVE to have that type' of build your own furniture projects on my list. Soon enough...but I do think my little man's bed frame is going to be near the top! My step-dad made me a couple things out of Pottery Barn's mag about 4 years or so ago before Ana White came out with so many great plans. I have those ever so coveted leaning shelves, some great Bailey Cubes for end tables, and some beautiful wall shelves inspired by these crown molding shelves. My step-dad did some fabulous work on my stuff and I was able to change it up how I wanted. I know. I am spoiled! I will have to take some pics and display them sometime. He is an excellent crafter with wood and I love that Ana White has made it accessible for just about everyone to dip their hand into that pot too.

Have you made anything fun from her blog? If so, link it up in a comment. I would love to see it!! Besides, you have to brag it up and show it off!

Dull Dining

After we moved into our new place, I felt like our dining room seemed a bit dull. I am not one to have things scatter every part of every wall but I definitely think there needs to be a good balance or else it just seems too plain. I hung this plate rack and put these lovely (clearance) plates on it. But it still seemed to be missing something. I decided a little vinyl would do the trick. I whipped out my Cricut and whipped up this saying. I love the space now! It was just what it needed to give it some added umph!Too cheesy? Not for me. It reminds me every time we eat that it is the memories that we should be focusing on and maybe less on the messes!

Mantle Decor Part 1

Wednesday, September 22, 2010

When I decorated my mantle, I was having a hard time starting from square one. It is sometimes a little daunting to start with a clean white slate. Almost like there are too many options it is so hard to choose.

I found some fun black and white fabric that I wanted to add in to spice up my room. I decided I wanted to use it somehow on my mantle but wasn't sure exactly how/where. I was at the dollar store and saw a white foam board there and figured that would be exactly what I needed.I cut my fabric a few inches bigger all around the board. Then I just took a staple gun and started pulling it tight and stapling it. SO easy! I love the extra bit of flair it added and it only cost me about $2. Decorating on the cheap is where it's at!!

My new toy...

The other day on a whim, I decided to start looking for a ruffler foot for my sewing machine. My machine is a powerhouse. It was my mom's in high school. A Bernina Record 830. I have since met a friend who happened to have the exact same machine. What are the chances of that??! She told me it was the most popular machine ever sold. I can believe it because it is made of metal and is SO darn heavy but that also means it is very sturdy. I love it!
I didn't think they would have a ruffler to fit my machine but I was wrong!! I was so excited! It wasn't that expensive either. Totally worth it to me. I finally started playing around with it yesterday. And I cannot tell you how fun it is! It also makes ruffling and pleating SO fast. I cannot wait to share some projects with it....besides all of those others I have waiting but have just been too much of a procrastinator to share.

But if you have been debating about getting a ruffler foot, I would highly recommend it. I bought mine off ebay brand new from a sewing place out in KS. (Gotta go back to my roots somehow I guess!!) So easy to use and well worth it!! Any other gotta have "feet" you suggest for a sewing machine?

Redo: TV Stand

Can I just tell you how much I struggle with TV cabinets? I don't want it to take over the room but I don't really want it to be ugly. Ever since the hubs and I got married (whew 7 years ago....) we have had this ugly TV stand. It was one of those first purchases as in fake wood bought from like Shopko or something for way under $100. So at the time, the price was right. Seriously, not too cute in color but 7 years ago it wasn't bad. Then the doors got broken when we moved. And we had it jimmy rigged for about 5 years. Pretty bad huh?! I finally decided we were not moving it again this time. But then it came with us yet again. Since it is "free" I have just moved it with us every time. But one of these days, when we are settled I am definitely getting something different. But for now, here is the makeover: A coat or two of Kilz Primer. This is a must if you want anything to stick to that glossy fake wood stuff. Then a bit of a do-it-yourself hand sand job. Some black spray paint...well a few cans actually. (Oh, and as if anything else would be on our TV but baseball. I think it is even the Braves playing. The hubs' favorite team of all time.) And last but not least, some new knobs. I think the whole redo cost me about $15-20. But its well worth it. I don't cringe when I see it. I love it! So for at least another year, it is sticking with me.

Spray paint just has the ability to change the whole look of something. Have you whipped out a can lately?
